The Magic Mole

Book One: The Adventures of Marcy and Sara

Where would you go if you could go anywhere?

About the Book (back cover blurb):

Navigating through the complexities of seventh-grade can be hard, but luckily best friends Marcy and Sara have each other to help along the way. After a long day of classes and snide remarks from Sara’s ex-bff, Brittany, nothing seems better than heading over to their secret hideout so they can imagine what like would be like on an impossibly far away planet. Maybe even a planet where every magical creature they had ever heard of lived, worked, played, and had their own unique civilizations and languages.

But they don’t have to play make-believe for long. One morning, a perfectly round spot appears on Marcy’s forearm after waking from a terrifying dream. With their highly developed thinking skills (okay – it was just plain luck!) they discover it’s a magic portal! Now with a simple “I wish,” they can travel anywhere. After test trips to Machu Picchu and Hawaii, somehow Earth isn’t enough. It’s time to put their dreams to the test and meet the magical creatures they had always hoped they would. Marcy and Sara decide to leave their universe entirely.

The only problem is, once they start adventuring around this new planet, with two suns and three moons in the sky, the portal stops working! All of the sudden Marcy and Sara start to wonder where exactly this magic mole came from. Maybe it isn’t the answer to all of their dreams because it seems to be leading them into their worst nightmares.

Author’s Note:

I first wrote The Magic Mole between fall 2001 and spring 2022. My bff at the time, Emigh, a mind-blowing Tori Amos concert, and a strong affinity toward Star Trek with its awesome teleporters and interplanetary travel sparked the initial inspiration. As a creature of magic myself with a thick streak of stone troll coursing through my essence, I found my way to Arcadia easily, and the book flowed out of me, complete in about half of year. My daughter was an infant at the time, so I wrote during naps and evenings. A vague attempt to get it published ensued. Life happened. Writing went to the back burner.

Fast-forward to 2008, I decided to pull it back out, brush off the dust, and self-publish. Ripples of success and interest ensued, but then I had a second little one in my life. Still, I was inspired to write and prove to myself that I could complete a second book. See New Alliances blog post for the next part of the story.
